Engelhard lookout over the Letaba River

Yes, Kruger, again. When I told you I was addicted to being on safari, I really wasn’t kidding. When the country went into lockdown in March last year, I was at Kruger. My second trip in 2021 will also be to Kruger. I never, ever, get tired of it and I always see new things. No two trips are the same. I will call this particular trip the “bird edition” because we’ve never seen so many beautiful birds. I might be turning into a birder, gasp!!

We see the craziest stuff on the road in South Africa, well all of Africa, really. We saw these on the drive to Kruger and I just had to include them! Hilarious!!

Kruger National Park

It’s normally a four and a half hour drive to Crocodile Bridge gate from our house. This trip we decided to explore new territory. We headed out for Satara camp, going into the park at Orpen gate. It was a seven hour drive from home to camp. Once we were in the park, we started seeing animals right away. We came across some giraffe first, and then a pack of wild dogs! We got into camp around 3pm and after a quick setup, we went out for an afternoon drive. We saw some waterbuck and elephants, but no cats.

Any time we go to a new area, we always book a night drive. Not only do you get to see different animals at night, but you also learn where the predators hang out. We had a night drive on our first night in Satara. We ended up seeing a lot of animals, most of them we had never seen before. It was a lucky night!

The next day we saw a lion from a distance, a saddle billed stork, and some elephants fighting! We went to see the southernmost Baobob tree, which was just starting to bloom. It was springtime. The Baobob is another tree that only grows in a very specific climate. We also had an excellent sunset, picture courtesy of Lian. She also supplied all of the pictures above from the night drive.

More coming soon!
