Yes, it’s been a while since an update came from the Graeber’s. I’ve had many friends enquiring about Cameron, so let’s start there! Cameron graduated in June 2020 with a virtual graduation, right smack in the middle of the mayhem of the ‘Rona. He was accepted to several universities and was planning on heading out like most graduates. Like many grads in his boat, plans changed. He deferred a year, then decided to stay and go to a local university. Due to our ongoing lockdown here in SA, the local university did not open on time. I know, shocking in SA right? Time for a new plan. Cam explored his plans for an online uni and discovered he could attend a school in Florida that would give him credit for his entire first year of college with his IB diploma. Lucky him, his year deferral cost him nothing. Finally, the kid was in college! During all this time, he made a decision that he wanted to be a pilot. He joined Lanseria Flight Centre and got to work. His first solo flight was in April 2021. Shortly thereafter he started taking us for rides!
He completed his Private Pilot’s License in July 2021, and is more than halfway through his Commercial License now. In December of 2021, he was offered a job at the flight school he attends. So he’s now working full time, is a full time college student and a full time flying student. He’s a busy guy. We see him for dinner most days, but that’s about it.
Over the holidays, he got a chance to go glider flying and absolutely loved it! He posted some video on his Instagram page. You can keep up with his shenanigans at graebercameron on Instagram. Still working on getting video on this blog. Stay tuned for that!
Regarding school, Cam will finish his AA degree this May and then go on to finish his Bachelor’s degree online as well. His plan is to stay here in South Africa with us for the time being. He should finish his Commercial license in April, and his Certified Flight Instructor rating shortly thereafter. He will build his hours here with teaching flying at the school and doing private charters. Eventually, he will head off to an airline once he has enough hours. With the way he’s going, I don’t think it will be too long!
We are super proud of him and super happy to still have him here with us. This Mom is very thankful to have the slow transition of the first-born leaving the nest…. It will definitely help having him around when Lian leaves in June. More on that soon!
Super happy for you Cameron. I’d say this is living the dream. Way to ride out this Covid thing. You may be in a fishbowl but you’re like a bird turned loose in the best kind of aviary.
oh go Cameron!!! Great pictures– and truly a “delicious journey” he’s on 🙂
