This trip to the USA was a long one. Considering it’s two days there and two days back, I always try to make the most of it. Virginia and West Virginia were the last stops on my journey. I made some visits to friends in Ashburn and then headed out to West Virginia to see my dear friend, Jeananne. We were so naughty and busy, we didn’t dare take any pictures. No pics, no proof! Then it was off to see Jennifer and have a mad shopping spree to fill those bags for the trip back home. I had a great weekend with Jen, Mark, Carson, and Nick before heading back to Africa.

About seven days before I was due to leave, South African Airlines went on strike for what ended up being a week. I was scheduled to fly back on SAA, so that was a problem. I ended up being able to switch my ticket to another airline and that routed me through Europe – specifically Frankfurt. Not one to pass up an opportunity for a day trip, I opted for a twelve hour layover and hit the town! It was November 29th, and the first day that the Christmas markets open all over Europe. Aaahhh, Gluhwein here I come. It was rainy and cold, but who cares? I wasn’t there for the weather.

There are very few things I miss about Europe, but Christmas markets are definitely one of them. The Frankfurt market was huge and exceeded my expectations. It even had a fondue stall with real fondue. I added another cup to my collection, indulged on some famous potato pancakes, and started my Christmas shopping. After a great day and an easy journey, I made it back to the airport and then home to JoBurg.

I used to have some real reservations about doing day trips while on a long layover. I made myself get out of my comfort zone several times last year and now I’m over it. I highly recommend long layovers and day trips. If you’re flying through a city that you’re curious about, get out there and see it! Sometimes opting for that longer layover will save you some money on the airline ticket. When you’re traveling through a city, do a google search to check out tours run by the airport or public transport to local areas from the airport. There are many cities that offer free tours as well. Check these out, and happy traveling!!
