The next day was bittersweet. We said goodbye to the game drives and headed off to the mountain area of Namibia called Spitzkoppe. It was amazing! This place ended up being one of our favorite places of the trip. We got there in late afternoon and set up camp. The spots are very far apart from each other, some almost a mile away.
It’s completely off the grid and there are no towns close by. We had dinner and roasted marshmallows. No light pollution meant we had excellent stargazing and we stayed up and took advantage of it until around 11. The next morning we slept in, had breakfast and took a shower. They were the most awesome showers I’ve ever seen in a camp. They were outdoors and built into the natural surroundings with rocks and trees. I was so enamoured with them I forgot to take a picture! We decided to change campsites, just because we could, and had a wonderful view for sunset. We also went to the rock arch just before sunset. After dinner, we did some more stargazing and went to bed. It was really a magical place. We will return!
After two blissful days, we packed up camp and headed over to the coast. We stopped in Hentiesbay for fuel and then drove along the coast to Swakopmund. It’s one of my favorite places in Namibia. There are many shipwrecks along the coast and we enjoyed sharing them with the kids. We drove through Walvis Bay, over the Tropic of Capricorn, and then on to Solitaire. I’ve blogged about this place before. It’s the gateway to the Namib desert, the oldest desert in the world. We had lunch at the famous bakery, ham and cheese baguettes, and apple pie.
We stayed at a place called Desert Hills and got there in the late afternoon. It was the desert in summertime, so we went swimming and then had dinner. It was an early evening since we had an early morning the next day.
Part 5 coming soon!
