The next morning we had another great breakfast and were on the road by 8:30. During our dinner at the Portuguese restaurant, we were talking with the owner about lobster and his excellent selection of seafood. Long story short, we found out we could get some lobster and take it home. So, on our way out of town, we went to buy 10kg of lobster since Luderitz is one of the main fishing ports in Africa. Strangely, they export 90% of their catch. It was a real treat! We got to Kolmanskop ghost town at 10am. The town was built in 1908 at the height of the diamond rush by German settlers. It was deserted in the 1950’s and the desert is slowly reclaiming the land. We spent some time exploring and made some sandwiches for lunch.
We got back on the road, then stopped in to see the horses again, but they weren’t there. Then we took off to Keetmanshoop to get our Covid tests done. We got into Keetmanshoop just before 2pm. At the same time we got into town and got a signal, we were trying to find the GP and got notice that the police had recovered some of our stolen items. What??? We couldn’t believe it! We got done with the testing and headed to the lodge. We stayed at Maritz Country Lodge for the night. We went to the grocery store and got German sausages, onions, and green beans for dinner and to reload on drinks. With the provisioning done, we headed out to the quiver tree forest. It was pretty awesome. We took lots of pictures and explored the campground there. Unbeknownst to us, there was an animal rescue there and we got to see some cheetah and a meerkat. We left in time to get back to the lodge for sunset and a beer while we were cooking dinner – which was delicious!
We decided over dinner that we would extend the trip a day and go back to Luderitz the next day to pick up our stuff. Yay! Another day of vacation!
Part 9 coming soon!
Amazing trees– so beautiful.
The buildings in the ghost town seem appropriately eerie….
Love the sand in the buildings of the ghost towns. Love the tree pictures too. Looking forward to your food pictures from the US too. Just wish I could have met Jeananne…next trip.
